Jean is an artist and writer LIVING AND WORKING BY THE SEA IN Tropical North Queensland, Australia.

Jean paints contemporary watercolours that address a variety of themes. Both her writing and her paintings show a simplicity of style, a straight forwardness, which aspires to convey a sense of connectedness through the joys and struggles of her own life.  Finding her place in the natural world has also influenced her work in recent years. The beach, and her love of simple beautiful things, has seen a paring down of process in both her writing and her painting.

“Some would call this an idyllic life and it sure does have its moments. The climate here is hot and humid all year round, with only seasonal breaks between wet and dry weather. Fortunately for me, watercolour responds well to this tropical clime.

I began painting in watercolour in 1992. At the time I had been inspired to write and illustrate a series of children’s books. There was just one small problem. I had to teach myself how to paint in watercolour first. Suffice it to say, this would eventually take way longer than I had originally anticipated! (grin)

And so it was that the “getting of watercolour wisdom” became my primary focus for a good number of years and the children’s books were shelved indefinitely. During those years, between raising my children and supporting the family business, I honed my watercolour skills and exhibited widely. I took workshops and travelled the world learning from some of the best in the business. Eventually I learned to paint like myself … and I am totally okay with that!

In 2004 I launched my first website. In 2007 I launched another, and began writing my Blog. That’s when I remembered how much I loved to write, and it wasn’t long before the words came back to me.

It’s funny how one passion can slew you off course for a number of years until eventually you come back around to yourself. I’ve learned that life is a process of circling back … at least that’s what I’ve found.

You may be pleased to know, my children’s books are at last coming to life. I have also recently published “Letters from the Beach” a book of collected writings and watercolours inspired by the sea (available for pre-order soon via this website). Other titles to follow.

If you’d like to know more about my watercolours, my upcoming books, or anything at all really … you can talk to me here.
