I am still a learner when it comes to life. But throughout the learning, art and writing have been my steadfast friends. Over the years, almost by default, these two good friends have developed and grown in ways quite unexpected; helping me to negotiate and articulate the inner and outer planes of this “being” in the world. Both have gifted me a unique visual and verbal language that has allowed me to interpret and express myself in ways that I might not have been able to, had it not been for them.
The fluidity of watercolour, the explosions and interactions of the medium, allow me to sometimes paint without painting. Some passages evolve even without the use of a brush. I paint mostly wet in wet. This way, the water does the work, allowing the molecules of paint freedom to work their magic. Seeing the image come to life is always such a surprise. It makes me realise that there is something going on here that is bigger than me. An expression more powerful than the idea itself.
The words are the same. They sometimes wake me at 3am and I have to be ready. There are no second chances. In the morning, they’ll be gone. The words will be different. It’s such a mystery to me (grin).
In so many ways, I am simply the doer of deeds. The messenger. The conduit between creator and created. These are the gifts (we all have) that bring to life the shapes and forms that define our unique identity. It’s an immense privilege and an overwhelming responsibility to get the work done. There is no time for procrastination (that human foible running loops our heads). That battle rages on unseen. The war fought, and not always won, every single day.
Woven throughout all of this, is life. The challenges we face. The influences, obstacles and disappointments. The unexpected breakthroughs and moments of joy. It all goes into the mix.
Throughout my life, I have been variously blessed, challenged, obstructed, delayed and occasionally carried miraculously through. I have been lucky. But not always. I remain forever grateful for small mercies, and heart wide open to every kindness. This is life. For all of us.
Finding our way through, is the “getting” of courage and the gaining of wisdom. You learn to negotiate. There is no other way.
Thanks for reading! I hope you found it useful. If so … please
